Why do you love design?
I love design because there is always an opportunity to learn something new. Design allows anyone to create a space that reflects them and what makes them unique. I have met so many great people in design that want to see students do well in the field and have the resources to help. Not everyone gets to enjoy the luxurious side of things, such as an interior designer does!
If this is too long please feel free to change it however works!
Where are you completing your internship?
I completed my internship at Hooker Furniture Corporation in High Point, NC.
Tell us more about your experience at Hooker Furniture.
"I mostly propped a showroom for sales representatives to sell the product, learned how to make a “market” bed, and I learned the importance of working with so many different professionals: contractors, painters, accessory specialists, and most importantly, corporate executives. My internship taught me that every showroom designer will do all the work required to bring success; grunt work, computer software use, and overall design.
What advice to you have for future students?
A few months into my internship, I met the top executives in the showroom. They were so kind and pleasant and one shared a piece of advice with me towards working in the furniture industry. “Don’t burn any bridges.” He mentioned and explained how everyone is connected to everybody in the industry, and he is absolutely right. Be kind and polite to everyone. Do not backstab or badmouth. Work well with others even if you don’t think you’ll want to. There is so much reward that comes from working with others and listening to different ideas.
